The Nara Clan (奈良一族, Nara Ichizoku) is a family of ninja from Konohagakure. They specialize in the manipulation shadows through the use of Yin Release and tending deer. Members of this clan are well known for their high-level intellects and have served as advisors to the Hokage. They are currently headed by Shikamaru Nara.

Overview

Their members possess great intellect and wit. By using Yin Release and a source of light, they can create shadows and manipulate them at will, making them able to pin enemies to the ground and control their bodies as long as they remain attached to the shadow. They also possess a sensory link with their shadow and do not need to see their target to know that they have made contact with their shadow. The Nara are renowned for being skilled tacticians, a feature that has risen them to aids of the Hokage and planners of military forces.

The clan keep a book with several medicines, secret concoctions and effects for generations, implying that they are skilled in the area of medicine. Among the medicine described in this book are the secret pills used by the Akimichi Clan. The Nara also has a special bond with the deer of the Nara Clan Forest, and only members of the clan are allowed inside without the deer attacking unless an outsider is given permission.

Their most prominent feature is their spiky ponytail and messy hair that resembles a porcupine.

The Nara clan has a special relationship with the Yamanaka and Akimichi clan. For generations, members of these three families have formed an "Ino–Shika–Chō Trio", named after the first part of the names of their members, with the Nara members forming the "Shika" in the trio. As a token of their bond, each parent gift their child an earring when they become genin. Moreover, to strengthen the unity between the three clans, a member of the Sarutobi clan will give them special earrings to present to each generation when they are promoted to chūnin after which they will swear their oaths. The earrings also symbolize that they are considered adults by their respective clans.

Trivia

• The jackets worn by Shikamaru and his son Shikadai were sewn with a simpler version of their clan's crest.
• The clan's full crest was shown much earlier than those of the Akimichi and Yamanaka, being seen on Shikamaru's shirt in a flashback in chapter 190.
• Nara, Nara, Japan was the capital of Japan in the eighth century, and is well known for its tame deer a relation as to how the Nara look after deer.
• "Ino–Shika–Chō" is the name of a card combination from Hanafuda.
• Hakuto and Shigezane from Sunagakure were secretly joined the Nara Clan to start a new life with the combined efforts of Fifth Kazekage and Shikamaru.
• Upon the marriage of Temari and Shikamaru Nara, the Kazekage Clan's bloodline has entered the Nara Clan.
