Sakura Uchiha (うちはサクラ, Uchiha Sakura, née Haruno (春野)) is a kunoichi of Konohagakure's Uchiha Clan, the mother of Sarada Uchiha and Sasuke Uchiha's wife. She is currently the best medical-nin in the world, becoming the Head of the Medical Department. Together with Naruto Uzumaki and Sasuke Uchiha, she is a former member of Team 7.
Background[]
Early Life[]
Sakura is a civilian born girl, the only child of Mebuki and Kizashi Haruno. She had an ordinary childhood, being raised with no shinobi background or the teachings of a honorable Clan of Konoha[1]. Upon entering the Academy, Sakura was bullied because of her large forehead, which caused her to develop an insecurity and complex, thus using her bangs to hide it. This situation caught the attention of Ino Yamanaka, a popular girl from her class, who saw Sakura crying and approached her[2], giving her a red ribbon to uncover her forehead and teaching her to embrace it, because hiding her insecurities meant playing the bullies' game[3].
That moment marked the beginning of a friendship between both girls, as Ino became Sakura's first ever friend, eventually breaking her shell and introducing her to other kids from their class[4]. Over the following years, Ino thought that Sakura was still a bud that might one day blossom into a flower more beautiful than a cosmos[5], so her guidance and friendship helped Sakura become comfortable with herself and develop into her own person. Sakura admired Ino for her cool personality and intelligence, as well as her talents as a kunoichi; traits that she never thought she would ever acquire and which developed into an inferiority complex[6]. Though she felt indebted to Ino for helping her, Sakura began to feel that she was living in Ino's shadow when she, instead, wanted to be Ino's equal[7].
At some point, after she entered the Academy, Sakura met Sasuke Uchiha and developed a crush on him. When she told her friends, she was surprised to learn how popular Sasuke was with the girls. Sakura heard a rumor of Sasuke being attracted to girls with long hair and she began letting her hair grow to get his attention. A couple of years later, when she learned Ino also had a crush on Sasuke, Sakura approached her and told her that their common interests made them rivals, thus ending their friendship and beginning a bitter competition for Sasuke's love[8].
Personality[]
As a child, Sakura was a shy and withdrawn girl with a difficulty to make friends. Her reserved personality would later be accentuated by the bullies picked on her for her large forehead, making her self-conscious about her appearance[3]. At the start of Part I, Sakura typically gives the outward impression of being polite to her superiors, considerate of her peers, and confident in herself[9]. She has occasional moments of bashfulness around Sasuke Uchiha and competitiveness around Ino Yamanaka[10], but otherwise appears quite collected. This reservation, though never disingenuous, frequently masks how Sakura really feels: in certain situations she has pronounced feelings of delinquency, jealousy, and anger. Rather than display these emotions to others, she projects them inward, allowing a manifestation of who she truly is — what is labelled "Inner Sakura" (内なるサクラ, Uchi Naru Sakura) — to have the opinions Sakura wants to keep to herself[11]. Inner Sakura, whose appearances are marked by an exclamation of "Shannarō!", is in a sense a personality separate from Sakura herself, a fact that allows her to overcome the Mind Body Switch Technique. At other times, Sakura and Inner Sakura are indistinguishable from each other, usually with regards to Naruto Uzumaki; if Naruto says or does something that annoys or upsets her, Sakura responds with violence, a reaction that under other circumstances would be delegated to Inner Sakura.
As Part I progresses, Sakura is increasingly exposed to the realities of the world, difficulties for which she cannot rely upon Inner Sakura to cope with. As an Academy student, Sakura succeeded through studying alone to the point of pride[12], able to avoid physical trials and thus allowing her to focus on her physical appearance in a bid to appeal to Sasuke. As a shinobi, however, this is insufficient: the long hair she puts so much effort into is a liability that opponents can use against her; missions cannot be completed with mere book smarts and it is necessary to be able to fight so that other shinobi will not kill her or her teammates. The latter makes Sakura particularly disappointed in herself, as she is unable to contribute much in battle and must rely on Naruto and Sasuke to save her[13]. She sets out to change this about herself, dedicating nearly three years of training to making herself as capable as Naruto and Sasuke; in the meantime, she becomes willing to sacrifice herself to protect them, coming to value them both very deeply[14]. She looks to Naruto as a model for this goal, inspired by his rapid growth and his determination to be there for her and all those he holds dear[15]. When Sakura realizes that she is as rude to Naruto as Sasuke was to her at his urging[16][17], she starts treating him better, cheering for his accomplishments and confiding her hopes and fears with him[18].
Inner Sakura makes one appearance at the very start of Part II and then is never seen again[19]. This is because Sakura is finally in touch with her feelings and is willing to express what she is thinking, a self-comfort she picked up during her training with Tsunade, though this has made her more emotional and impulsive at times[20]. Her violent and/or loud outbursts are, as in Part I, uncontrolled and often directed at Naruto, usually as a reaction to his variations of the Sexy Technique, whenever he asks her out on a date or anything she feels is out of line, along with when anybody does something that offends her[21]. Sakura no longer thinks poorly of Naruto despite thinking he is an idiot and her earlier stern disparaging opinion of him that flares at times[22]. She now holds his abilities in high regard, is ever-worrying for his safety and well-being to the point of easily feeling unbearable guilt, and values him as one of her closest friends[23]. Despite criticizing Naruto for his perverted nature, Sakura herself has a perverted side, enjoying something even Naruto thought was disgusting[24]. Upon meeting Sai, Sakura is the only member of the former Team 7 that tries to befriend the new member of the team[25], even if his remarks about Sasuke infuriate her[26]. Sai eventually points out that he believes Naruto knows Sakura too well for his own good, constantly placing himself in personal peril out of his feelings for her so that Sakura will be happy[27]. Sakura is moved to tears by this, feeling unbearably guilty for what she feels she put Naruto through; and despite her attempts to take responsibility for herself during the Summit by trying to deal with Sasuke herself, she still finds herself relying on him due to her own shaky resolve[28] nearly costing Sakura her life[29]. She ultimately settles for doing whatever she can for him, trying to do more in supporting him and his decisions concerning Sasuke, trying to do more to help him bear the challenges of being a jinchūriki, and fighting at his side whenever possible. She is helped in this goal by Tsunade's influence, who trained her to have a contempt for losing and an unbending will; she will place herself at risk so that others do not need to and to assure her allies' victory.
Sakura has been in love with Sasuke since childhood and initially focuses on getting his attention above everything else. Her initial infatuation with him was rooted from his good looks and cool, collecting attitude, and his rejections failed to deter her. After becoming teammates, Sakura realized Sasuke's imperfections and suffering, and her desire shifted to helping him as much as she can, which resulted in the two of them becoming closer and protective towards each other and her feelings developing into true love. Despite being grateful for her loving him after she confesses her feelings to stop him from defecting from Konoha, Sasuke rejects her but thanks her before leaving[30]. This rejection deeply upsets Sakura, driving her to plea for Naruto to bring Sasuke home and, when Naruto fails, motivating her to become stronger so that she can bring Sasuke back herself[31]. Sasuke, however, is colder to both Sakura and Naruto in Part II: he showed indifference to them when they met after more than two years and, in moments of intense hatred while trying to cut his bonds with anyone, has even tried to kill them. Sakura tries to separate herself from her feelings when Sasuke becomes an international criminal, attempting to kill him in order to prevent a war[32], but her love for him proves to be too great for her to harm him[33], Even at the end of the Fourth Shinobi World War, Sakura holds out hope that she may mean something to him[34]. Despite Sasuke's crimes, Sakura is able to forgive him after he apologizes to her. She is also pleasantly surprised when Sasuke exhibits a much softer in front of her and begins poking her on the forehead, an affectionate gesture he picked up from his brother.[35]
As an adult, Sakura's personality is relatively the same, although she becomes a more calmed woman. She doesn't lose her sense of purpose and the responsibilities she holds as a kunoichi and as a first-rate medic. After marrying Sasuke, Sakura became very loyal to him and even refused to leave his side when they were traveling together and she was pregnant with their daughter, Sarada[36]. Sakura raised Sarada on her own for a long while due to Sasuke being away on his mission for many years, and she frequently reassured Sarada that Sasuke loves them both and would return home once his mission was over[37]. Sakura is also very patient and wise as her love and patience for Sasuke have never faded[38] even though Sarada was barely a toddler when he left. As a mother, Sakura is loving and protective, has a very close relationship with her daughter, and will praise her for her achievements just as quickly as she admonishes her for wrongdoing. Although Sakura is very supportive of Sasuke's duties, she is disappointed when he teases her by refusing to show her affection.
Appearance[]
Sakura has fair skin, green eyes, and pink hair. She still wears her hair in short length, right above her shoulders with a partition oriented to the left that makes her Strength of a Hundred Seal, in the shape of a purple rhombus, visible in the enter of her forehead.
Since her youth, Sakura's physical appearance was often pointed out by others like Ino, Naruto and Konohamaru[2][39][40]. As she got older, her beauty has been praised by Jiraiya, likening her looks to Tsunade's own, or Inari, pointing out how pretty she had become;[20][41] even being the crush of other men like Morio or Rock Lee[42][43]. By adulthood, she's considered a super human beauty[44].
In adulthood, Sakura's attire consists of a red sleeveless qipao top that exposes her belly button, the back of which carries the Uchiha Clan crest and falls to her knees. She also wears light-colored pants, high heels, a red headband, and white bracelets. For battle, Sakura wears a red top similar to her Part II one, with the Uchiha clan crest on the back, as well as elbow protectors and flatter sandals. At home, she often dons a long white apron and keep her fingernails long and well-manicured. She sometimes wears dresses and earrings as well. She sports a similar outfit to the quipao she uses during the Blank Period in her missions as an adult.
Abilities[]
As a genin, due to focusing on her studies and her civilian background, Sakura lacked any particular combat skill, other than the basic skills she learned in the Academy, which greatly limited her role in missions, to the point where she frequently noted how much she relied on her teammates[1]. Determined to change herself, she undergoes intense training with Tsunade for two-and-a-half years[45]. Following in her master's footsteps, she grows stronger than she had been before, inevitably surpassing Tsunade in medicine[46] and strength[47], an event that had been predicted by those that witnessed Sakura's journey[48][49]. This feat became a reality when she formed the Strength of a Hundred Seal during the Fourth Shinobi World War, inheriting the power of a Sannin and a Kage[50]. When she releases this seal, her abilities are greatly amplified[51]. Between the end of the war and The Last: Naruto the Movie, she was promoted to the rank of jōnin[52], and was capable of single-handily defeating Kido Tsumiki, despite the Anbu being empowered by a Tailed Beast Drug, by using a newly developed jutsu[53]. During this time, she worked as a doctor of the Medic Corps, her importance and proficiency among the medics of Konoha gave her the power to lead groups of medical-nin[54]. With her perfect chakra control, Sakura has developed her own sensory jutsu and is also skilled in fūinjutsu[55][56].
Chakra Control and Physical Prowess[]
As a student in the Academy, Sakura had one of the lowest grades in taijutsu[57]. However, while she has barely been seen using taijutsu in Part I, Sakura was able to hold her own against Ino, one of the top students in her class[58]. She was also quick enough to avoid attacks and skilled in shurikenjutsu to aid her teammates[59][60]. After training with Tsunade her taijutsu improved, allowing her to defeat and dodge some of Sasori's puppets without attaining a scratch[61]. As an adult, she was able to clash with Shin Uchiha[62], a wielder of the Mangekyō Sharingan, and destroy his organs with a single punch[63].
Throughout Part I, Sakura's most defining skill was her proficiency in chakra control[64], exceeding the abilities of the genius Sasuke Uchiha[65]. Such exact use of her chakra allows her to perform a jutsu with maximum efficiency without wasting much chakra[66]. Due to this, Kakashi Hatake noted that she is well-suited for genjutsu, describing Sakura as a genjutsu-type (幻術タイプ, Genjutsu Taipu)[67][68]. While never actually being seen using genjutsu, she is able to quickly identify when an illusion has been cast and then release herself and others from it[69]. By the time of The Last: Naruto the Movie, she becomes resistant to genjutsu. Because of her perfect chakra control, Tsunade was able to teach Sakura how to apply this mastery on the battlefield, and making taijutsu a vital part to many of her abilities. By building up chakra into her fists and releasing it on contact with a target, she is able to achieve what Naruto constantly refers to as "monstrous strength". Sakura's strength is enough to destroy buildings, giant rocks[70] or upend the earth[71][72]. When used against living targets, Sakura can break bones, rupture organs, or even kill with a single strike. Her brute force was enough to damage Kaguya Ōtsutsuki with one blow, breaking one of her horns off and drawing blood despite the goddess' immense durability[73]. Furthermore, she can send chakra throughout her entire body and improve her ability to withstand crushing blows[74] and repel attacks using her bare hands[75]. Tsunade explicitly trained Sakura to avoid attacks, thus making her a medic that could fight battles[76]. Hashirama Senju noted that Sakura's raw strength surpassed the power of Tsunade[47].
Another objective of Tsunade's training was to increase Sakura's available chakra supply to complete the Strength of a Hundred Seal[77], something that would take her three years to accomplish. When the seal is released, Sakura has access to all of the accumulated chakra, allowing her to perform jutsu on a greater scale than she is normally able to and, among other things, making her physical attacks even more powerful[78]. She can also transfer this chakra to others[79].
Sakura's unique mastery of chakra has improved enough to roughly map out entire structures by channeling her chakra through inorganic materials, developing a unique sensory jutsu that applies only to her. Doing so allows her to detect threats, traps, and hidden rooms[55].
Ninjutsu[]
Sakura has shown to be skilled in shurikenjutsu, able to accurately pin a falling Naruto to a tree with a kunai from a distance[80]. By the Fourth Shinobi World War, Sakura could use the Summoning Technique and, like Tsunade, summon Katsuyu, the giant slug of the Shikkotsu Forest. By having Katsuyu split apart and attach itself to others, Sakura could remotely monitor many allies at once, healing them and replenishing their chakra as needed[81]. Sakura's chakra affinities include Earth, Water, Yin, and Yang Release. As an adult, she learnt Fire Release as well[82] and has also become skilled in the use of fūinjutsu. Upon contact, she can skillfully implant a cherry blossom-shaped seal on a target. On command, these seals release red chakra threads that completely restrict body movement[83].
Medical Ninjutsu[]
The main purpose of Tsunade's training was to teach Sakura medical ninjutsu, which demanded Sakura's refined chakra control. As such, Sakura can heal even the most fatal of injuries[84]. Tsunade remarks that Sakura's proficiency in healing is exceptionally rare, as she mastered the most basic healing ninjutsu in just three months of training[85]. Her ability to heal herself in the middle of a fight is recognized as the pinnacle of external injury treatment[86][87]. When dealing with an enemy with an extremely resistant body, Sakura created a jutsu that combines her chakra-enhanced fists with her medical ninjutsu[88] to heal the resulting damage, eventually killing the affected cells from over-replication[89][90]. By releasing the Strength of a Hundred Seal, Sakura can use the Creation Rebirth, a forbidden technique known as the "pinnacle of medical ninjutsu". This ninjutsu puts her body in a state in which it regenerates and heals itself so that she does't need to stop to treat herself or even be fazed by injury[91]. If healing ninjutsu proves ineffective, Sakura can make incisions in her patients to try to directly treat her patients' vital organs[92]. She can also cure those who have been poisoned by extracting the poison from their bodies while simultaneously repairing the damage, something which even poison experts like Chiyo cannot do. To ensure a complete recovery, Sakura can create an effective antidote after analyzing the poison's contents, even for poisons that Sasori did not believe anyone but himself could make antidotes for[93].
During the War, after Kurama was extracted from Naruto's body, Sakura was able to keep him alive by making an incision on his side and pumping his heart directly with her hands and performing CPR at the same time as she healed the wound she had opened, thus saving his life[94]. Two years after the war, she again saved Naruto from chakra deprivation, by pouring her own chakra into him and Kurama, which took her three days[95].
Her medical expertise extends to more standard medicine as well, enabling her to perform autopsies and examine cells with a knowledge of genetics[96]. Sakura was taught by Tsunade how to make fast-acting sleeping gas[97], and she was taught by Shizune how to concoct poisons that, when coated on weapons, could debilitate or paralyse a person with a single scratch[98]. As an adult, Sakura is hailed as the best medical-nin in Konoha and the world, and her abilities made her the Head of the Medical Department[99].
Intelligence[]
While she was still in the Academy, Sakura received consistently high test scores[100]. It is because of her diligence in her studies that Sakura initially struggled in combat situations, for which reason she was added to Team 7 so that she could benefit from the more battle-oriented Naruto and Sasuke, while in turn they would benefit from her large knowledge base[101]. She was able to answer the written portion of the Chūnin Exams all by herself, something genin were not expected to be able to do[102]. Sakura's intelligence is nevertheless consistently useful, making her observational enough to guess an opponent's tactics from a brief scan of the battlefield[103] and pick up on otherwise minor inconsistencies in conversation[104][105]. Sasuke deemed her analytical skills to be superior to his Sharingan. Among the shinobi of her class, Sakura is second only to Shikamaru in intelligence[106] and both usually collaborate with the Cryptanalysis Team[107] and the Department of Analytical Study when required, especially when it comes to decoding and deciphering[108].
Sakura has an excellent memory, being able to quickly piece together multiple pieces of information that she has previously come across in order to form a hypothesis[109]. In actual combat, Sakura frequently relies on misleading her opponents, either by letting them think they have outsmarted her so that they lower their guard[110] or by making them believe they have defeated her so that they will approach her, and she can defeat them with a single punch[111]. Likewise, she can memorize multiple bits of information, including small details, and use it in her favor to deceive the enemy[112].
New Era[]
During the Blank Period, Sakura proposed and opened a Therapy Center to assess children's minds and hearts as a branch inside the Konoha Hospital and other nations like Sunagakure[113]. In the anime, when Sasuke and Sakura began dating, they had their first date in a bench overlooking the ocean, although it only lasted for two and a half minutes[114]. Four years after the war, the couple traveled the world and got married, and Sakura became pregnant during that period of time, refusing to leave her husband's side despite her state[115]. When she went into labor, Sasuke brought her to one of Orochimaru's hideouts and had Karin help with the delivery. Sakura gave birth to their daughter, Sarada, and returned to Konoha with her family. Afterwards, Sakura and Sasuke raised their daughter together for some time, but he left the village for a top secret mission early in Sarada's childhood, leaving her with few memories of him[116]. When Naruto became Hokage years later, Sakura watched his inauguration with her daughter[117]. Later, Sakura attended a top-secret Five Kage Summit with her husband, who informed his wife and the Kage about him uncovering evidence of Kaguya forming a new White Zetsu Army in order to face some greater threat. Agreeing to keep this information secret and wishing to safeguard the future of their daughter and the new generation, Sasuke continued his wanderings as he tried to find more information, using his Rinnegan to inspect other dimensions.
Sarada would ask about her father and Sakura assured her daughter that Sasuke loves both of them and that, when he completed his important mission, he would come home; when these conversations went on for too long, Sakura poked Sarada's forehead and promised to continue them some other time, which is Sasuke's usual sign of affection.
As an adult, she was made the Head of the Medical Department and the director of Konoha Hospital, as well as becoming a medical ninjutsu teacher[118][99]. Boruto remarked that she was a suitable replacement for Naruto as Hokage[119][120].
Academy Arc[]
In the anime, as the village began getting constant attacks from an unknown culprit, Sakura treated a Konoha Purification Plant worker that had his chakra drained in the Konoha hospital. When the culprit behind the attacks was revealed to be Sumire Kakei, a unit was deployed to apprehend her. The rogue student unleashed Nue onto the village. While Kakashi organised the unit to defend from Konoha its attack, Sakura worked with a unit to treat the injured.
Sarada Uchiha Arc[]

In the anime, Sakura is about to go on a trip with Ino but as she begins to leave, she realizes that a patient's teddy bear, which she brought home so that she could sew it, has not been picked up yet. Sakura promised to return the bear that day, but Sarada promises that she will do it for her. Later, Sakura and Ino go to the seaside cliff, where Sakura and Sasuke went on their first date. Ino asks Sakura if Sasuke contacted her. Sakura says no, wondering what Sasuke is doing at the moment. Later that night, Sakura arrives home and asks Sarada if she returned the teddy bear, with Sarada commenting it was easy. Sarada asks Sakura how her trip was, and Sakura calls it wonderful.
Fifteen years after the war, as her graduation from the Academy approaches, Sarada starts asking Sakura about Sasuke with greater earnest. Sakura struggles to answer questions about Sasuke's childhood in order to hide his past from Sarada, leading Sarada to question if Sasuke and Sakura are even married. This upsets Sakura and she punches the ground, which then inadvertently destroys their house. Sakura faints at the realization of what she has done.
She later wakes up to find herself in the care of Shizune, who informs her that Sarada has left the village to look for Sasuke and also tells her about Sarada's doubts on her parentage. After chuckling at her daughter's recklessness, Sakura goes after her. Sakura arrives in time to save Sarada and Sasuke from Shin Uchiha, rupturing his organs. Sakura starts apologizing to Sarada for not being more open with her, but Sasuke insists that he is to blame. They are cut off by the appearance of one of Shin's creatures, which teleports him, one of his injured "sons", and Sakura to his hideout. Shin asks her to transplant organs from the son into him, which she refuses, not only because he is an enemy and because his son is only a child. Shin performs the operation himself, explaining to Sakura while he does so that his sons are, in fact, his clones and thus deserve no special consideration. Sakura is disgusted by Shin's philosophy on genetics and offspring, declaring he has no idea what it is like to be a real parent.
When Shin completes his surgery, Sakura, having revealed she was only pretending to be a helpless hostage to get information on Shin for Sasuke, prepare to attack him. In the anime, Sakura and Shin enroll in a battle of taijutsu, in which Sakura ends pierced by his blades. Sasuke and the others arrive to help in time to get Sakura from Shin's upcoming final blow, and Sasuke removes some of the scalpels that Shin stabbed Sakura with. Happy to see her husband, Sakura thanks Sasuke. Shin's clones, meanwhile, kill Shin because of how he has mistreated them. The clones then attack the group, and Sakura stands in front of Sarada to protect her, but Sarada jumps into the fight and uses her Sharingan and chakra-enhanced strength to defeat most of the clones, shocking Sakura. With the fighting done, Sakura hugs Sarada and expresses relief that Sarada is alright. Sakura then confirms that she is her biological mother and Sarada apologizes for doubting her. Sasuke then tells Sarada that his heart is connected to Sakura's, Sarada's sole existence being enough proof of their bond.
Sasuke accompanies them back to Konoha and spends some time with Sarada and Sakura, even posing for a family photo that their home has been missing. Sakura and Sarada see him off as he leaves Konoha again; when Sarada becomes sad, Sasuke hugs her and pokes her forehead, promising to return as Sakura looks on with a smile. Sakura gives him a prepared lunch and hopes for a kiss in return, but he departs without further comment while smirking, disappointing Sakura as she waves goodbye.
Naruto Shinden: Parent and Child Day[]

During the new Konohagakure holiday, Parent and Child Day, Sakura had to spend much of her time at the hospital. Later the day, she found to her shock that Sasuke had returned to the village. He discussed with her his problem in connecting with Sarada. Sakura noted that having spent much of Sarada's life away and only hearing stories about Sasuke and his various exploits, Sarada probably became disillusioned at who Sasuke was as a person and his attempts at being a dotting father seemed lame. Ultimately, Sakura suggested that he should approach Sarada more like how Sasuke's relationship was with his father and brother back in the day; just enjoying the time they have together and talk about their goals. Later that night, the Uchiha family enjoyed a hearty meal together.
Graduation Arc[]
At home, Sakura notices Sarada's lack of excitement over going camping, and Sarada's complaints about Boruto remind Sakura of her own complaints about Naruto during their Academy days. As ninja classes begin preparing for the graduation exams, Sakura joins her daughter to discuss her progress and future goals with her teacher.
Versus Momoshiki Arc[]

Several months later, when Sarada leaves to train for the upcoming Chūnin Exams, Sakura sees her off. Before she goes, Sarada notes that Sakura must be happy since Sasuke has come back to Konoha, to which Sakura replies that Sarada must be the happiest. Later, during the exams' final matches, Sakura watches with Temari and Ino, cheering loudly when Sarada wins her first match. The finals are interrupted by an attack from Kinshiki and Momoshiki Ōtsutsuki, who proceed to destroy the stadium; Sakura punches the air above her, creating a shock wave strong enough to destroy the falling debris to protect herself and the other spectators.
After Kinshiki and Momoshiki kidnap Naruto, Sakura heals Hinata, who was badly injured in her failed attempt to save him. When Boruto prepares to join Sasuke in rescuing Naruto, Sakura carries Hinata to him so that she can reason with him. However, since Boruto reminds Hinata, like Sakura, of a younger Naruto, she allows him to go. Naruto is successfully rescued and life returns to normal when he gets back to Konoha. As Sarada and her team leave for a mission, Sakura watches them with Sasuke.
Mitsuki's Disappearance Arc[]
In the anime, when Mitsuki seemingly betrayed the village by attacking two gate guards, the village was put on lockdown. Sakura was in charge of treating the injured men. As one of them began to recover and show signs of regaining consciousness, Sakura gave the report to Yurito to be delivered to the Hokage. Meanwhile, Boruto and Sarada left the village without authorization to find Mitsuki. While Hinata was worried about the consequences of their children's actions, Sakura insisted that they knew what their actions could lead to but still had faith they would be okay.
Later, suspecting that the attacks would make another attempt to kill the recovering guards to cover their tracks, Moegi disguised herself as one. The suspicions proved correct as a brainwashed Yurito tried to poison her. Despite Moegi and Sakura cornering him, Yurito used the poison as a smokescreen to escape. Ultimately, Yurito is captured and freed from his brainwashing, but falls victim to the enemies' Explosive Clay trap to cover their tracks. As Sakura treats the deeply injured Yurito, she gives Naruto permission to briefly talk with the recovering guards.
Later, Sarada joined Boruto in retrieving Mitsuki, who apparently betrayed the village. When the genin returned, an angry but relieved Sakura hugged her daughter as a welcome.
Time Slip Arc[]
After Sasuke helped in delivering Shukaku safely to the village, he was given some downtime. While Sakura was happy to have her husband back, she was dismayed by how little time he spent at home. Regardless, she decided to make his favorite dinner to welcome him home.
Meanwhile, as Sasuke and Boruto were sent back in time to shortly after Sasuke's defection, past-Sakura bumped into the two. Fearing changing the future from interacting with his future wife, Sasuke decided to keep his distance. Sakura noted how similar Naruto and Boruto where, which the two bluntly denied. Later, Sakura joined her friends in helping Boruto and Naruto clean up a bathhouse to make up for the commotion Naruto and Jiraiya caused there.
Days later, as Sakura was returning home from another grueling session of training with Tsunade, she bumped into adult Sasuke. He quickly apologized and rushed off, dropping a piece of paper in the process (a letter from Sarada). Sakura looked at the contents. While it was revealed to be a letter with the message smeared too much to read, Sakura made out Sasuke's name written on it. Suspecting that Boruto knew something about Sasuke, she decided to confront him about it. Boruto, nervous about being found out, simply said that he knew a different Sasuke than the one she knew. While seeing that he was hiding something, Sakura decided to drop the subject with Boruto, instead finding the stranger's teacher to ask him directly.
She later found the mysterious man battle an unknown assailant alongside Boruto and Jiraiya, who was after Naruto. When Sasuke's efforts proved futile thanks to his continued fatigue and the foe's strange abilities, he tackled the man into the river with him. While the man emerged unharmed but fuming at Sasuke's interference, Sakura fished Sasuke out of the river and hid him while using her new medical ninjutsu to treat him. Eventually, Sasuke awoke, accidentally addressing her by name. As she began to ask him questions, her efforts to heal Sasuke overtaxed her and she fainted. Sasuke gently laid her down before going to help his allies.
Days later, after Urashiki was defeated and Sasuke and the others were discharged from the hospital, Sasuke and Boruto were ready to leave. Before they could, they were approached by Sakura again, still determined to learn "the stranger's" connection to Sasuke. As Sasuke fumbled to find an excuse, Jiraiya chimed in, giving an elaborate story about how they were avid fans of his and wanted to train under him, hence the injuries. Sakura ultimately accepted the story, finding the traveler strange.
Before leaving, Sasuke used his Sharingan to erase Sakura's memories, along with everyone else of the past, of the recent events to protect the timeline. After Sasuke and Boruto returned to the present, Sasuke found his wife sleeping at the table, waiting for him. After she awoke and greeted him, she decided to make him some food, to which Sasuke warmly thanked her.
Kara Actuation Arc[]
In the anime, when Team 7 was defeated by Deepa, the genin were brought back to the village for emergency care. As Sakura worked on Boruto, Shizune worked on Sarada. After a successful operation on both genin, Sakura voiced her concerns for the mental impact of the defeat on them. Three days later, Sarada and Boruto disappeared from their respective rooms in the hospital. Sakura however quickly deduced that the two would meet up with Konohamaru and Mugino who were ready for a mission to investigate Kara. To her relieve however, the children merely wanted to voice their trust in the older ninja to handle the mission while they would stay behind and commit themselves to grow stronger with hard training.
Later, as Sarada sought intense training from Sasuke, Sakura watched from afar in concern for her daughter. As she continued to observe the grueling conditions her daughter was going through, Sakura confronted her family. She voiced her concern that Sarada was pushing herself too hard after just recovering, and even more horrified to hear her talk about the Mangekyō Sharingan. While Sakura insisted that she couldn't push herself so recklessly, Sarada was furious to hear her mother baby her, refusing to see why she wanted to get stronger, and stormed off. Alone with her husband, Sakura admitted that, as a mother, she couldn't handle the thought of Sarada being injured again like she did. Likewise, she feared the path Sarada could potentially walk if she were to acquire the Mangekyō Sharingan. Sasuke insisted that, as parents, they have to prepare Sarada as much as possible for the world, and that she is strong as they were back then. Unable to fully accept Sasuke's view, Sakura was left depressed. Later that night, Ino and Hinata decided to take Sakura out on a girls' night out to talk. They insisted that, as mothers themselves, they too feared for their children's well-being, but they had to have faith that they were strong and could endure. Ino insisted that Sakura as a child had drive that pushed her forward, and Sarada inherited as much from Sakura as she did from Sasuke. Ino's words managed to cheer up Sakura.
The following day, Sakura decided to oversee Sarada's training personally. She insisted that just blindly facing the challenge wouldn't yield any results. She placed Sarada into a sparing match with her, quickly overwhelming her. Sakura then pointed out Sarada's biggest flaws. Sarada's chakra control was still underdeveloped, quickly burning through it in her various actions and unleashing it randomly when attacking; this affected both her combat performance and development of her Sharingan. Sarada's second problem was that her resolve was still too frail, fearing defeat. Determined to break past her limits, Sarada faced down Sakura again, using her Sharingan to mimic the movements and general timing of Sakura's attacks to reach a standstill. As Sakura tearfully criticized Sarada's recklessness, she was proud to see her daughter's inner strength was like her own, deciding to put Sarada through the same grueling combat training Tsunade did to her to improve her chakra control.
Ao Arc[]
In the anime, Sakura attended the memorial service for the fallen people of the Fourth Shinobi World War.
Kakashi Retsuden: The Sixth Hokage and the Failure Boy[]
Main article: Kakashi Retsuden: The Sixth Hokage and the Failure Boy
After finding a book about the Sage of Six Paths in the library of Redaku, Kakashi sends it to Konohagakure to be analyzed, trusting that a team with Sakura and Shikamaru will be successful in deciphering the contents. Later, during Kakashi's surprise party he asks whether Sakura and Sasuke have returned from the Astronomy Institute in Redaku.
Sasuke Retsuden: The Uchiha Descendants and the Heavenly Stardust[]
Main article: Sasuke Retsuden: The Uchiha Descendants and the Heavenly Stardust
Sakura infiltrates the Astronomy Institute of Redaku as the medic to improve the conditions of the prisoners. She saves Sasuke from being killed by the poison of Menō's claws, a unique paralyzing venom that Sasuke's body isn't able to tolerate. When he awakens, he asks Sakura why she came to Redaku and what happened to Sarada. carrying him to thee infirmary and examining him, theorizing that the poison temporarily shuts down his chakra pathway system and, by extension, the rest of his body. Once he recovers enough to speak, Sasuke asks why she's here and if something has happened to their daughter, Sarada. Sakura assures him that Sarada is fine; she's staying with Iruka Umino. Sakura discovered that Naruto is suffering form the same illness as the Sage of Six Paths, which hindered him from using his chakra and, in order to solve the problem, they must find the astronomical chart he used to locate the polar particles for Naruto. When Sakura sends a hawk with Sasuke's blood sample to Konohagakure, Gigi enters the infirmary to be treated by Sakura. Sasuke hides behind a curtain but, as soon as Gigi's hand approaches Sakura's hair, he stops the prisoner and tells him that the doctor is his wife and that she came to Redaku to see her beloved husband. After discovering that Penjira is in charge of the prison's archives, Sakura suggests a bet, and if she wins, she can borrow the key on the condition that she return it to him when she's done. Penjira agrees. Sasuke prefers to use genjutsu on Penjira instead, but Sakura dismisses this idea and insists on playing normally, reminding Sasuke that she's a disciple of the legendary gambler, Tsunade. She beats him using her intelligence to memorize the different card combinations.
Sakura and Sasuke meet at the basement to investigate the archives. Sasuke feels jealous that Gigi goes to visit Sakura with fake excuses, so he takes her hand and creates a ring using Earth Release. Sakura uses her sensory jutsu to map out the building and check for traps. They find the astronomical map is a book that contains pictures used in Hoshinarabe made by the Sage of Six Paths. Sakura suspects that the drawings might represent constellations and that the pictures of Kurama and the Ten-Tails are consistently related to the months of the year. Following that day, after Sakura manages to sneak into Zansūru's office and discovered that he'll soon be visited by a messenger for Redaku's Prime Minister, she questions Fundaru about the contents of the message he was going to deliver. Sakura knocks him out, transforming into him while Sasuke transforms into his cane. The disguised Sakura meets Zansūru in his office. As she discretely rolls Sasuke to the hidden room she had previously found when she mapped the building, Sakura tries to keep the director busy. A few days later, Sakura receives a message from Kakashi about the Prime Minister. She goes to the cafeteria to inform Sasuke, but she can't find him. Ganno points out the ring in her finger and tells her that Sasuke is lucky to have her in his life. Sakura wonders how Ganno was able to discover who is her husband, to which he responds that Sasuke used to look for the tree's pink flowers to bloom. In her office, Sakura studies the astronomical map once more and discovers that the Hoshinarabe are sequences for a ninjutsu. Sasuke takes her to the place where the polar particles reside and, while admiring the scenery, takes Sakura's hand and confides that he's never worried about the strength of their bond, but that he does regret missing out on these sorts of small changes that Sakura and Sarada undergo. Sakura understands and says she feels the same. Sakura performs the hand seals to obtain the container with the polar particles. Before they can get back, the earth surrounding the Institute starts to shake and grows distorted, from which soon emerges dozens of revived dragons.
Sasuke tells Sakura to find Zansūru inside he Institute. After his office empty, Sakura starts guiding the prisiones to safety. She finds Gigi in the hall and explains the situation. Gigi stabs Sakura in the back with a kunai coated with Menō's poison and takes the polar particles. A giant creature emerges and crashes the building with Sakura still inside and unable to move. Under the debris, Sasuke finds Sakura and starts healing her wounds. When Sakura recovers, she persists in fighting the dragons, determined to keep them busy until the last of the prisoners can get to safety. Gigi finds her and fights her. Sakura aims debris at Gigi in order to distract him and escape, but he catches up and blocks her path. Sakura traps Gigi with a trap she placed on the ground, bound to a seal on his wrist that she had placed the first time they met. Accepting his loss, Gigi reveals that he wanted to use the Impure World Reincarnation to revive his lover, Margo. Sakura disapproved this idea, even though she admits she might be tempted to do the same thing in his position. A dragon that was going to attack Sakura, meanwhile, resists its passing, maneuvering closer to Gigi and slashing his throat in its final moment, taking vengeance against him for reviving it in the first place. Sakura quickly removes the seal placed on Gigi, Sasuke supports his body, and Sakura begins healing his injury. Gigi pleas that she allow him to die, which she refuses, reminding him that he has to see Margo again. He nevertheless bids his consciousness to fade, not resisting the blood clogging his throat. Before his mind succumbs to nothingness, he reflects on how, if he'd been as strong as Sasuke and Sakura, all of this could have been avoided. The day after she returns to Konoha, Sakura meets Ino Yamanaka for tea. They discuss their families, with Sakura confessing that, after all this time, she still considers Sasuke to be "so so so so cool". Ino notices the ring Sakura is wearing and congratulates her for it. Sakura admires it, as it is no longer just an impromptu present: the gem contains trace amounts of Sasuke's chakra, which enabled him to find her beneath the collapsed Institute; the ring essentially saved her life. She still has to remove it regularly because it interferes with her work, but she hopes that, decades from now, when she's retired, she'll get to wear it all day long.
Sakura and her family have dinner together, which included almost all of Sasuke's favorite dishes prepared by Sarada. Sakura discreetly kicks Sasuke to remind him to compliment Sarada. When the doorbell rings, Sakura answers it and finds it is Shikamaru Nara. He apologizes for interrupting dinner and hands her an analysis of the polar particles. Konoha's intelligence apparatuses are in fact investigating many lingering questions from Sasuke and Sakura's mission, such as Zansūru's genjutsu-immune eye or the Konoha symbol found in the Institute's archives, even though these aren't strictly relevant to Naruto's illness. Sakura inquiries about Naruto, who Shikamaru reports isn't well; he's careful not to let Sarada hear them, as it's Naruto's wish is that none of the children know what he's going through. Shikamaru himself is clearly exhausted as well from taking on much of Naruto's workload, but Sakura understands that staying busy probably helps him keep his mind off Naruto's predicament. Shikamaru turns to head back to the office, confiding that, unless they make a breakthrough soon, Naruto will probably permanently lose his ability to use chakra.
Naruto Retsuden: Naruto Uzumaki and the Spiral Destiny[]
Main article: Naruto Retsuden: Naruto Uzumaki and the Spiral Destiny
During the Hokage's visit to the Land of Stairs, Yanaru Aze, an assasination specialist, prepares to kill Naruto using three Shadow Clone Kekkei Genkai. Sakura joins the visit as one of the Hokage's bodyguards. In the midst of danger, she strangles one of Yanaru's clones and covers his mouth, causing him an oxygen deficiency and prompting the clone to vanish.
One year later, Sakura, alongside Sasuke, Shikamaru and Kakashi, meet in a secret room located in a Japanese Confectionery Shop provided by Tami. After Naruto's arrival, they discuss the strange disease that he suffers, an event that is hindering him from using his chakra, the same sympthoms that the Sage of Six Paths suffered from when he was in Redaku, according to Kurama. Sakura, who had been investigating his physical condition, concluded that there were no anomalies or bacteria in his body after an examination, and she warned Naruto against using his chakra to avoid more fainting episodes. Sasuke offered to go to Redaku to investigate the polar particles that the Sage of Six Paths used to treat his disease.
The following day, after seeing Sasuke depart on his mission, Naruto has another fainting episode. Sakura approaches him and starts healing the scratches Naruto got from falling to the ground. Upon revising the examination performed in the hospital, Sakura came up with a diagnose for Naruto's problem, and concluded that his chakra pathway system is shutting down, hindering him from using his chakra. She decides to follow Sasuke and aid him on his mission, leaving Sarada with Iruka to take care of her.
After their mission in Redaku, Sakura and Sasuke come back to Konoha and discover that Naruto has lost the polar particles they had obtained in the Astronomy Institute. Inside their secret meeting point, Sakura explains that, in the map they found in Redaku, that the polar particles came from a celestial body in the sky that crosses the Land of Fire at a height of 200km. Decided to follow the celestial body and save Naruto, Sakura studies the observation record from Chihare and the team prepares a plan to reach it.
The next day, Sakura arrives at Naruto's house riding Chihare's motorcycle. Upon reaching the celestial body, Sakura would be in charge of chakra control and, connecting a needle between her husband and Naruto to supply him, Sasuke would provide the chakra. Sakura turns the engine on and runs up vertically on the Earth Release pillar made by Kakashi and Yamato. The motorcycle crosses the clouds and a lightning bolt hits Sakura, Sasuke and Naruto. After surpassing the obstacles, Sakura wonders if the motorcycle can withstand more hits, but Sasuke cuts the storm using his Chidori. The pillars made by Kakashi and Yamato stop growing, making the motorcycle stumble back and forth, but Sakura's chakra control takes them back to the original path and help from Gaara and Kurotsuchi.
After reaching 200km, Sakura realizes that they weren't able to reach the celestial body on time. Sasuke gets up from the motorcycle holding Naruto in order to jump to the celestial body. Sakura takes Sasuke by the collar and kisses him, taking the headband hidden inside his cloak at the same time and throwing it in the direction of the celestial body for her husband to switch places with, resulting in the success if the mission.
Days after the mission, Sakura, Sasuke, Kakashi and Naruto meet in the Hokage monument and drink apple cider together. Naruto promises he will watch the fireworks with his teammates the next year.
Kawaki Arc[]
While buying flowers at Yamanaka Flowers for Sasuke's imminent return, Ino disapproved the idea of a husband who is almost never home, to which Sakura responded that she only wanted him to return to the village safely despite feeling lonely at times. When Sarada came to ask Sakura about her forehead seal, she explained and revealed that it had existed since the age of the Sage of Six Paths. She also revealed Sasuke was returning home when Ino suddenly trembled upon sensing a sinister chakra near Naruto, much to Sakura's shock. Sarada left the shop, telling Sakura that she was going home. Later, when she was on her way back from the flower shop, Sakura found an injured Sasuke who teleported behind her on the road, again shocking her. She took him to the hospital and proceeded to heal him, saving him from his critical injuries.
After Sasuke and Naruto made a full recovery, Sarada and her team were treated as well due to making a daring rescue of Naruto. Sarada explained to her parents how during their battle against Boro, it was only thanks to a strange new evolution of Boruto's Kāma that they were able to defeat him. She noted that Boruto not only sprouted a horn and manifested a Byakugan in his right eye with his massive increase in power, but even was acting differently. This concerned Sasuke, but Sakura told her daughter to rest.
Later, in the anime, after Isshiki Ōtsutsuki was defeated at the cost of Sasuke's Rinnegan and Kurama, Sakura aided Katasuke in testing Naruto's body for any remaining traces of Kurama and its capacities, only to find none. While Sakura was dismayed to admit this, Naruto firmly chose to not wallow over it, feeling that Kurama would ridicule him for it.
Chūnin Re-Examination Arc[]
In the anime, Konoha held another Chūnin Exam. Sarada was one of four chūnin promoted by the end of it, much to Sakura's and Sasuke's joy. Days later, Sakura commented on how Sarada taking over as team captain meant Konohamaru would no longer be part of their team, something Sarada was having trouble accepting. When Mirai returned to the village poisoned from what was supposed to be a simple mission, Sakura treated her until she could report what had happened.
Kawaki and Himawari in the Academy Arc[]
In the anime, after Kawaki and Himawari's teacher, Hana Kaka, was revealed as the sleeper assassin from the Land of Bamboo, she was taken to Konoha Hospital to receive treatment for her split personality disorder from Sakura.
Labyrinth Game Arc[]
In the anime, while Sakura trained Sarada in shurikenjutsu they talk about Sasuke and Boruto's whereabouts. Sakura informed her that they were going to find a new messenger hawk for Sasuke. When Sarada was visibly annoyed, Sakura advised to make peace with Sasuke leaving and returning so suddenly, although Sakura's own frustration showed when she destroyed the shuriken target.
New Era: II[]
Boruto's Return Arc[]
After Inojin was fatally injured by Jura and healed by Himawari using her new powers, Team 10 took him to Konoha Hospital in order to have Sakura look at his wounds. She was surprised by Kurama's healing being able to mend Inojin's chest but he is not waking up due to his chakra pathway system being blocked. In order to ensure a full recovery, Sakura worked to restart it again, comforting Ino and the rest about his safety.
Creation and Conception[]
Although Sakura is the most recurring female character in Naruto, Masashi Kishimoto did not originally intend for Sakura to be the heroine of the series. Kishimoto attributed this to his being unable to draw good heroine characters; he fashioned Sakura as a girl who cannot understand men, the best example of a heroine he could come up with. Sakura's creation is a result of Kishimoto's desire to make a somewhat irritating character that was well-intentioned[121]. Despite these elements, Kishimoto is fond of Sakura, as he feels that many of her personality traits are common among all people, thus offering her a sense of real humanity[122]. When asked in an interview if there is something about Sakura's background that was never revealed, Kishimoto explained that he had never thought of this as she is a "normal girl"[123].
Sakura's most well-known physical characteristic is her broad forehead. Because of this, Kishimoto at times focused too much on drawing it in scenes or promotional artwork where Sakura was featured prominently; this resulted in her forehead appearing too large. When designing Sakura, Kishimoto focused on her silhouette and created a costume as simple as possible. This represented a divergence from the other main characters of the series, whose costumes were very detailed. The leggings were the most notable aspect of her design, as they were meant to show that she is very active. At the start of the series, her leggings extended below her knees and closely resembled trousers. As Part I progressed, the leggings became increasingly shorter and tighter[124]. When designing Sakura in her Part II appearance, Kishimoto decided to change her clothes to a more lively karate suit style. The upper part, though, still had a China-esque feeling to it, in order to make her more feminine[125].
Similar to his inexperience in drawing heroines, Kishimoto lacked the experience needed to make Sakura "cute" when he first began drawing her. Although he said that her appearance had become cuter since then, Kishimoto and much of the Naruto manga staff agreed that Sakura had been "far from cute" at the start of the series[122]. However, Kishimoto stated that even he was surprised at how beautiful he managed to design Sakura's physical appearance for The Last: Naruto the Movie, calling this version of Sakura his favorite.
Kishimoto's staff said that Sakura's pink hair was intended to give her a unique style and to resemble cherry blossoms, after which she is named.
