A sensor-type ( (感知タイプ, Kanchi Taipu, literally meaning: perception type) is a ninja that is capable of detecting the presence of others, normally by sensing their chakra, or using specific sensory jutsu to locate an enemy.
Description[]
In order to use their sensory abilities, a shinobi must be kneading chakra[1]. They can also change to a "sensory mode" (感知仕様, literally meaning perception specification) to perceive events while they're busy in battle[2], although sensing while engaging in a fight requires high concentration[3]. Sensing can be used to anticipate an enemy attack, however, the sensor must see the attack in order to avoid it[4][5].
The series show that anyone can feel the presence of chakra, especially those that are powerful or released in large quantities[6][7][8]. However, only shinobi classified as sensor-type can naturally feel chakra at discretion, indifferently of its magnitude, allowing them to detect signatures outside of the battlefield or identify individuals[9][10]. Not every sensor has the same abilities and their proficiency lies in the training or their innate capabilities. A skilled sensor can detect their targets from a great distance or among a crowd[11], tell their movements apart to anticipate them or perceive if there are other sensors using their skills[12][13][14]. Karin has exceptional sensing skills, able to tell if her targets are lying based on any fluctuation of their chakra, sense if a ninja is under the effects of genjutsu or distinguish animals form people[15][16][17]. Mū and Tobirama Senju have displayed that skilled sensors can discern between chakra signatures of shinobi from different populations and even link them back to relatives; for example Mū commented that Gaara and his father Rasa share similar chakra signatures[18], he also noted that different chakra signatures from different villages were gathered in one place; while Tobirama was able to discern that Karin was descended from the Uzumaki and Orochimaru's body was made out of his brother's cells[19][20]. Nagato, another skilled sensor, was able to detect the exact location of the person controlling them despite that person erecting a barrier around themselves[21][22]. Members of the Yamanaka Clan use a hiden technique to transfer their perception to other non-sensors[23]. It's also common for Konoha to use members of the Inuzuka Clan and their ninken for their tracking abilities[24].
The method of sensing is often achieved by performing the Ram Seal or simply closing the eyes and concentrating. Other individuals like Minato Namikaze, Tobirama Senju and Sakura Uchiha can sense enemies or objects by touching the ground or channeling chakra[25][26][27]. Sensors can also use sensing techniques (感知忍術, kanchi ninjutsu) to enhanced their perception, such as the Mind's Eye of Kagura used by Karin[28]. How a shinobi becomes a sensor-type is unknown, as some non-sensors are classified as such due to using specific sensing techniques, like Nagato's Rain Tiger at Will Technique, Gaara's Concealed Sand Picture Cat or Sakura Uchiha's unique sensing technique. These jutsu are classified as contact-type (接触タイプ, sesshoku taipu) sensing techniques[29][30][27]. Perceptive abilities can be refined or acquired with training[31]. An example of this is Obito Uchiha, who displayed sensing skills as adult despite having non as a child[32][33]. The shinobi from the Hyūga Clan are also described as sensor-types due to their Byakugan and its ability to see chakra[34].
Conversely, there are methods that can hinder a sensor's ability to detect individuals. Mū has mastered the Dustless Bewildering Cover Technique, a jutsu used to avoid detection by traditional perception, but he can be sensed through other means such as contact-type sensing techniques[35]. Karin is able to completely suppress her chakra, though she cannot use her abilities while doing this[36]. The Aburame clan members can use their insects to create false chakra signals and confuse sensors[37]. The Demonic Illusion: Steaming Multistoried Building used by the Second Mizukage and his Giant Clam also prevents them from being sensed through traditional methods while in effect[38]. Zetsu is also able — through unknown means — to render himself undetectable[39]. It's also possible to confuse sensors by changing the frequency of chakra, such as Nagato[40].
